Magistr (Master)

In contrast to many countries where magistr programmes consern postgraduate professional education, the Federal law "On higher and postgraduate professional education" places the magistr training to the third training level of the fundamental educational programmes of higher professional education.

According to the Russian State Educational Standarts of Higher Professional Education the fundamental educational programme of magistr training supposes the term of study not less than 6 years in any field of study. It consists of not less than a four-year bakalavr (bachelor) training programme in a corresponding field of study and not less than two years of a specialised magistr training directed to the scientific-research or educational activity. Magistr training educational programmes are comleted by a final attestation, including the defense of a graduate work (magistr dissertation).

The magistr degree acknowledges the educational level, orientation of obtained education on a scientific-research or educational activity, abilities and experiences necessary for an apprentice scientist or teacher.

Magistr studies are comleted by a State Final Attestation, which includes the defense of a magistr dissertation and the passing of State final examinations. A magistr dissertation is a piece of independent research prepared under the guidance of a supervisor. A Magistr Diploma as well as a Specialist Diploma is the prerequisite for admission to academic degree study programmes.
