As soon as the winners - a research supervisor, five boys and a girl - entered an arrival lounge at Domodedovo airport, they were caught by objective lenses of TV- and photocameras. Really it is an event of a national-wide importance!
'Last time a Russia team won a mathematics competition in 1995' Nazar Agakhanov, the research supervisor and Moscow Physical and Technical Institute associate professor, informed. 'And we shared the first place with a China team then. To beat China was a real dream for us. So our victory in the competition is a real triumph of Russian young mathematics for the first time within a very long period. It's possible to say that we have given a hope to our country. '
A main hero of this competition is Konstantin Matveev - a Russia team member and a student of the Omsk
lyceum # 66. He is the only one of more then five hundred contestants who scored 37 points from 42 possible for fulfilled tasks and became a sure winner.
It is not a first serious victory of Konstantin. He is a repeated prize winner of regional, inter-regional and All-Russian mathematics competitions. From the previous mathematics competition in China he came back home with a medal as well, but a bronze one. An advance is obvious!
'I got keen on mathematics in the fifth form' told the champion. 'I gained the lead in a city mathematics competition and since then I started to visit a mathematics circle. Of course, I had some abilities, but I was not a child prodigy. I would not achieve such success without my teachers.
Konstantin told that the last competition was the one of the most difficult of the late years. Tasks contestants had to solve differ too much from school equations and logarithms. Although school knowledge helped, of course. But the main at the international competition is to have a clear mind and to think logically.
In the future Konstantin Matveev is to become a scientist-mathematician. And the first step to this goal has been already done - Konstantin has become a student of the faculty of mechanics and mathematics in the Lomonosov Moscow State University. Furthermore he entered the university without passing exams, but as a member of the Russia team at the international competition. Aleksei Esin, Vladislav Volkov, Maria Ilukhina and Ivan Mitrofanov, the other members of the Russia team, have entered the university as well and will become Konstantin's classmates. As for Sergei Drozdov - he will improve his mathematics abilities as a student of the faculty of mechanics and mathematics in the Saint-Petersburg State University.
