New school year begins in Russia

September 1 is Day of Knowledge in Russia when a new school year begins.
Traditionally on this day, senior school students take first-graders by the hand and lead them into classrooms for their first ever school lesson.
This year, more than 1.4 million first-graders went to school across the country, 33,000 more than last year.
About 1,100 colleges and universities, including some 500 private ones, are welcoming their first-year students.
