Russkiy Mir Celebrates 300th Anniversary of Mikhail Lomonosov's Birthday
November 19th, is the 300th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Lomonosov, and events honoring the great scholar and thinker and founder of Moscow State University are being held in Russia and throughout the world.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held this morning at the Lomonosov monument near the old Moscow State University building on Mokhovaya Ulitsa. Later in the day the symbolic Flame of Knowledge, which MSU students lit in the hometown of Lomonosov in the Arkhangelsk region, will arrive in Moscow. A relay will be held taking the flame from the old building to the main building of the university, where a special concert will be held.
Scholars from all over the world have come to the university to take part in a conference Mikhail Lomonosov and Current Traditions of Science and Education in Europe. The first three days will be devoted to the subject Lomonosov and Humboldt - Russia and Germany's Cooperation in Science.
Events to mark the 300th anniversary of Lomonosov's have also been held in St Petersburg, where he spent decades working at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Speaking at his graveside in Alexander Nevsky Monastery, Governor Georgy Poltavchenko and the Nobel-winning physicist Professor Zhores Alferov drew attention to Lomonosov's patriotism, as well as scholarly universalism.
