Russia Celebrates National Flag Day
On Wednesday, Russia marks its National Flag Day. The history of the Russian tricolor is more than 300 years old, Voice of Russia reports. The state flag appeared in Russia at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the time when Russia was becoming a powerful state.
Then the three colors of the flag received their first official interpretation. Red stood for great power statehood, blue symbolized the Virgin Mary, the holy protectress of Russia, and white was the color of freedom and independence.
At present the following unofficial interpretation is used: white means peace, blue is the color of faith and fidelity, while red symbolizes force and blood shed for the Motherland.
