On September 1, a group of U.S high school students arrived to Russia to study the Russian language, literature and culture at a university in Kazan (the Republic of Tatarstan).

Lisa Choate, vice-president of the American Councils for International Education (ACIE) told an ITAR-TASS correspondent that more than 700 applicants wanted to go, but only 170 of the most eligible students were selected.

Unfortunately, she said, when American students go to Russia, their Russian is not good enough for studying other disciplines. Of course, they have to work hard. But this does them good. As Choate added, last year many students went to Russia not even knowing the Russian alphabet. But when they returned home their command of Russian was quite adequate.

Starting from 2009 American high school students began their Russian studies in this country. On average, about 170 American students attend these classes held in different Russian cities annually.

As a follow-up, many continue deepening their knowledge of this country at U.S. colleges and universities, even at Harvard.

The project manager Maria Chetyrkina, who is based in the United States had this to say over the telephone:

"150 American high school students have already had their 6- to 8- week training during the summer semester within the framework of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program in Kazan, Nizhni Novgorod, Cheboksary and Gatchina."

Since September 1, 18 American students have been studying the Russian language and culture in one of the universities in Kazan. It is an academic program designed for up to 11 months", said project manager Maria Chetyrkina.

It only remains to add that plans have been worked out for the continuation of the studies in 2013

One more direction the ACIE is involved in is running the center "Russian World" established in Washington,D.C. in partnership with the same-name foundation in Moscow.

Inter-regional Russia-USA cooperation in the area of education is a two-way street. That was Topic A on the agenda of a 2-day working visit to the United States of a delegation led by president of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, which ended on the 4th. The delegation held talks in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania about establishing of the scientific town "Innopolis Kazan."

This bilateral interaction keeps expanding in the now well-established fields with the addition of the IT area.
