Summer school "Cultural-Educational Tourism: travelling around taiga places"

20.03.2014 12:49

Welcome to the ancient Siberian town of Tara!

Tara, founded in 1594, has been mentioned numerous times, beginning with chronicles, tsars' decrees, Old Russian "Tale of towns Tara and Tyuman" by Savva Esipov, G.F. Miller's "History of Siberia" and numerous historical essays.

Tara carefully preserves its history in landmark buildings with local and federal significance. You will have the unique opportunity to have a look at merchants' mansions, two-story log homes, the Spassky Cathedral and places that used to be the Tea Road. Visitors to our town will not forget the majestic beauty of the "grey" river Irtysh, a waterway for the first Russian pioneers, including Ermak Timofeevich and Tara's founder - prince Andrey Eletskiy.

The Excursionist Program will give you opportunity to:

  • walk along ancient provincial town streets, feasting your eyes on nice lace of wooden architraves
  • climb the bell-tower of the Spassky Cathedral and gaze the town and its burbs
  • get acquainted with the official history of our town, the legends of tall stories about merchants' mansions and their secret underpasses, Tara riot and miracle-working icons and construction of churches
  • visit the historical and regional natural history museum where numerous exhibits of culture and everyday life of the people inhabiting the Tara district are on display
  • enjoy a rich collection of Siberian artists' paintings which are in the art gallery
  • turn up in the area of archeological excavations - perhaps you might be an eyewitness of one of the underpasses' discovery!

Tara is a native town of the great Russian actor Michael Ulyanov. You can visit the North Drama Theater named in honor of M. Ulyanov. It will open its heart for you. Nowadays, Tara is proud of its modern attractions: the Ice Arena "Olimp', the cinema-centre "Aviator", a magnificent bridge across the river Irtysh, branches of higher educational institutions and local businesses.
