TSU scientists have created the first Russian biopolymer for craniomaxillofacial surgery
The staff of TSU's Ñatalytic Studies Laboratory have solved a problem of national importance. Chemists have developed a method for producing compostable polymers based on polylactic acid. There are many applications for these materials, but, first of all, it is intended for regenerative medicine, cosmetic surgery, dentistry, and pharmacy.
- Biopolymers are widely used abroad in craniomaxillofacial surgery and dentistry as a binder, - says Vladimir Botwin, undergraduate student of TSU's Faculty of Chemistry, one of the developers. - This material serves as a matrix for the filler, such as hydroxyapatite, which is the main mineral component of bones. Due to the biodegradability of the polymer, reoperation for extraction of the implant is not required. After three to six months, it is completely decomposed and replaced by bone. During the synthesis process, we can set the desired time of resorption of the polymer.
Biopolymers can significantly make the lives of many people easier , and for some of them it will become their salvation. With their help, we can replace virtually any lost fragment of bone. This need arises for those who have been injured or have a congenital pathology.
- The missing pieces can be printed on a 3D-printer, - says Olga Gordeeva, the second developer, junior researcher, a graduate student of the TSU Faculty of Chemistry. - The biopolymer is loaded into the extruder and spun out into a thread, which will be the material for the three-dimensional printing. The use of 3D printing technology allows producing medical products of almost any shape. In addition, the use of different types of yarns allows us to create medical materials with gradient terms of bioresorption.
In addition, the biopolymer can serve as a capsule for a long-acting dental drug. Expanding over time, it will gradually release the drug, providing a therapeutic effect.
