TSU entered the top-100 best universities in the THE ranking

07.12.2015 10:50

Tomsk State University entered the top-100 universities in Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2015/16. TSU took the 87th position, becoming 9th among Russian universities and 7th among the universities participating in the programme to increase competitiveness that are included in this ranking.

The Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings has existed for three years. It represents the higher education institutions of the BRICS countries and developing countries. It ranks the assessed activities of universities from 48 countries on 13 indicators in five areas: education (the educational environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations, international cooperation, and innovation.

This year, the rules of the ranking had some changes. First, the list of top universities grew to 200 (last year the rating of only 100 best universities was published). Second, the drafters are now collaborating with the company Elsevier, which uses the bibliometric data of the Scopus database and takes into account self-citations of articles (the previous company Thomson Reuters used the database Web of Science, and self-citations were excluded).

- The number of countries participating in the rankings this year has increased, and correspondingly, competition has increased. In this context, the appearance of TSU in the top-100 best universities in the BRICS countries and developing economies is especially important, - says Rector Eduard Galazhinsky. - This is not the first ranking where we have improved our position, which proves the stability of our growth. We see that the University has chosen the right path of developing and successfully moving forward. It has become recognizable in the world, expanding international cooperation, and can already be considered a world-class university.

This year TSU has strengthened its position in the prestigious world rankingQS World University Rankings2015/16, finishing 481-490th position; in the ranking ofQS Emerging Europe and Central Asia(EECA), it rose to 27th place; in the ranking ofQS World University Rankings: BRICS 2015, it took the 44th place; and TSU was one of 13 Russian universities included in the globaltop-800 ranking of Times Higher Education-2015.
