Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of Volga Federal District, the center of Nizhny Novgorod region and the recognized capital of Volga-Vyatka economic region.
Nizhny Novgorod is located in latitude 56°19' north and in longitude 44°00 ' east in the Central European part of Russia at the confluence of the rivers Volga and Oka at a distance of 439 km to the east from Moscow.
The climate is moderate continental. The medium temperature of January is about
-12C, of July - about +18C. The medium level of precipitations is about 500 mm a year. The balneal climatic resort area "Zeliony Gorod" (Green City) is at a distance of 25 km from Nizhny Novgorod, within the bounds of its residential suburb

The quantity of the population is 1 286 433 people. 1 280 446 of them belong to urban population, and 5987 people are villagers (January, 1st, 2007).
The transport infrastructure including an international airport, passenger and cargo river ports, a powerful railway junction has allowed to realize the idea of prolongation of the transnational European corridor up to Nizhny Novgorod and to make the region attractive to tourism.
In the city there are quite a lot of unique monuments of history, architecture and culture. This fact has given grounds UNESCO to include Nizhny Novgorod in the list of the 100 cities of the world representing world historical and cultural value.
