Omsk is the administrative center of Omsk region. In the south Omsk borders upon Kazakhstan, in the north - upon Tyumen region. Omsk is situated at the intersection of the Transsiberian railway and the powerful waterway - the river Irtysh. Such an advantageous economic and geographical position of the city promoted its fast and all-around development.
Omsk is the seventh on number of inhabitants city among 13 cities-millionaires of the Russian Federation and the sixth on the population among regions of Siberian Federal District.
The climate of the city of Omsk is continental. The medium temperature of July is 17C, of January - 20C below zero. Omsk is located in the same latitude as Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Ryazan, Vitebsk, Kansas, Kaliningrad, Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Manchester.
Omsk is a large transport junction: in it there are railways (including the Transsiberian railway) and highways, a river port and an airport.
The largest in Russia (and the third in Europe) oil refining combine (now belonging to OAO Gazprom Oil) is located in Omsk. The city is the center of mechanical engineering, metallurgy, light, polygraphic, chemical and petrochemical industries.
About 60 institutions of university level higher education work in Omsk. The students are trained on different directions and specialities: economy, jurisprudence, pedagogics, psychology, public relations, stomatology, design and others.
М.А. Vrubel (the well known Russian painter) was born in Omsk. A.N. Tupolev (the Soviet aircraft designer who developed over 100 types of planes, 70 of which were produced serially) and S.P. Korolyov (the well known Soviet scientist, the designer of space-rocket systems, the director of producing ballistic and geophysical rockets, booster rockets and piloted spacecrafts "Vostok" (East) and "Voskhod" (Rising) on which a space flight of the person and an output of the person into the space were accomplished for the first time in history) worked there.
