Saint-Petersburg

  • Administrative centre of region

  • "Second" capital of Russia

  • Was found by Peter I in 1703

  • Names: 1914-1924 Petrograd; 1924-1992 Leningrad; till 1914 and after 1992 Saint-Petersburg

  • located at the mouth of the Neva River, which flows into the Gulf of Finland

  • average daytime temperatures -10 C in January and +18C in June

  • population is about 5 million people

  • one is the most beautiful cities of the World with lots of places of interest (sightseeing)

  • second centre in Russia of science, culture and industry

  • centre of education in Russia. About 56 623 students from 139 countries were studying in Saint-Petersburg in 1999.

    Public pay phones are located all over the city (look for them be the metro stations, hotels, shops etc). You can use most of them to phone any desired place of the World. You can buy phone cards at newspapers stands, metro, and lots of shops.

    Internet

                   There are Internet Cafés on Nevsky Avenue, which operate 24 hours a day. But don't forget to check internet class in your University.

    Mail

                   Post offices sell stamps and envelopes. But mail from Russia typically takes over a month to reach any destination. You can use express mail, which means higher rate and door-to-door service.
