Our Life and Study in Russia

Wang Sing Jian

Time flies - I have been to Russia for seven months already. Not awfully long, but still long enough. In addition to the Russian language, I learned quite a lot of things. First of all, I would like to tell you about Tomsk - the town where I live. It's a small and very quiet place with a lot of wide and clean avenues. The main thoroughfare is Lenin Avenue - a place of many stores and restaurants. A lot of famous universities are also located on Lenin Avenue, including TGU (Tomsk State University), TPU (Tomsk Polytechnic University), TUSUR, etc. Tomsk also boasts a theater and a museum. I watched a theater performance "Don't Want to be a Dog". A very interesting fairy tale. I learned some Russian history in the museum. This town happens to be 401 years old. Of course, it has a long history. They say, Russia has a lot of trees, Tomsk surely does. That is why the air is fresh here. The environment is very clean. Russians are very kind, hearty and communicative people. When I came here, my Russian was very poor. I would stop the passers-by to ask the way or whatever else, and they would always listen to me patiently and attentively, and would show me the way to a store, an exchange office, a restaurant, etc. The winter was bitterly cold. I wear my hair long and, therefore, hate wearing the hat, but the Russians told me I better put on a warm hat or visit the doctor regularly. I thank them now for their care. I am a student of Tomsk Polytechnic University, IMO Department. I learn Russian. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) is one of the most famous higher institutions in Tomsk. I am happy to be a TPU student. In China I just hated to learn complex grammar, enhance my vocabulary - I simply did not hear a thing. Thanks to my nice and patient instructors, I improved my Russian in no time. They are serious and patient people, always explaining the issues I do not understand. We communicate with each other pretty regularly. The grammar, which had seemed so complex in China, here proved to be quite simple. One day the instructors took me out on a tour around the town during which I found out a lot about Tomsk. Now I just love learning Russian, because I do want to talk to Russians, learn about their traditions and history, because Russia is a great nation and the Russian language is a great language. I am not just a student. I am an open-minded, reliable, talkative and self-confident person. I live in a dormitory. We have a kitchen here where one can practice cooking. We also have a washing machine, a fridge and a bathroom. We have a TV set on the block. I watch movies on TV every night. Monday through Friday are my working days. Each day I have three double periods from 8:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday are my days off. I like walking and shopping. In the stores it occurred to me that clothes and fruits are very expensive here. It must be the climate. They have a lot of interesting sports here. For example, skiing. Of course, we have skis in China but I never tried skiing back then even though I have a knack for sports. However, skiing is difficult for me as well. Upon arrival here I discovered another talent of mine - I am an accomplished cook! A friend of mine jokingly remarked, if I find no job upon graduation, I might easily become a cook. I said it was an interesting idea. In a couple of months I'm going back to China. Certainly, I'm looking forward to going home. I miss my folks but I know that I will be missing my instructors, my TPU, Tomsk and Russia.
