Russian Weather

Pham Chi Nam

After two years in Tomsk, the Russian weather no longer feels odd to me. When I first came here, the cold stuck me badly. I simply failed to comprehend how people could live in such a cold. However, subsequently I grew to appreciate it, and now it feels sort of funny. I particularly like the snow. It may sound odd to you but it's true! Back in Vietnam, I was dreaming of the day when I will hold the snow in my hands, feeling it melt. Never did I expect there to be so many types of snow. Most of all I like the big snow as it falls in warm weather. I usually go out for a walk in such snow. However, it's not all about winter in Tomsk - summer, autumn and spring are also beautiful here in their own way. Autumn in Tomsk is the most impressive season for me. In my hometown there are only summer and winter, with no autumn whatsoever. That is why I fell in love with the Russian golden autumn instantly. I would ask myself, "Is there anything to match the Russian autumn? What can be more fun than walking along the Tom embankment with the friends?" I wrote to my girlfriend, if she were here, I would take her out to the camp garden, which turns gold in autumn. And in summer I just cannot sit before my favorite computer, because the sun and the summer breeze are beckoning me. And if I do not take a walk, I would certainly play football. Even though the wind and the sun are not so strong as in Kuinen, my hometown, here I have my friends - Vietnamese, Russians and from all over the world. We all make the game a true battle.

In the summer they sell a lot of fruits and berries, and I can eat them as much as back home. In Tomsk I tried a lot of berries I have never seen before. I just love red bilberry. Yes, it is delicious! I also make drinks out of them, also very tasty! O! I forgot to mention the river Tom. If you ever come to Tomsk, make sure to take a boat trip down the Tom. It will be most interesting. Last year my friends and I made such boat trip and we saw villages, fields and fishermen on the river. This year the town organized the first Shrovetide fest for the students. It proved to be a wonderful holiday. They organized quite a number of traditional games, and this time we could eat the pancakes for free. This is a holiday to celebrate the passing of winter and greet the coming spring. The people are happy to have survived another winter. I also felt happier as the temperature went up and I was able to walk out without a mask. They also have snow in spring, occasionally. But it's not that bad, because it usually falls in a warm weather and all the people go out for a walk. Today is April 21, and the spring is finally here in Tomsk, Russia. The ice in the streets is breaking, the grass begins to grow, the sun is shining all the time. I gladly came to the classes, and here I am - writing a composition "Russian Weather".
