Activity of the Sudanese Association of Soviet (Russian) HE institutions' alumni
The Association of the Soviet and Russian HE institutions' alumni got registered with the Ministry of Culture of Sudan on March 23, 2002. It boasts membership of 1 thousand individuals out of some 5 thousand alumni of the former Soviet Union of which about 2 thousand studied medicine. The Association's Governing body is the Council of Twenty elected for one year. The resolutions adopted by the Council are implemented by the 5-strong Executive Committee elected from among its members.
The President of the Association - Professor Fatima Abdel Makhmud - was the first female Minister in Sudan (She was Minister of Health from 1973 to 1980). She also held high positions at various organizations dealing with the problems of women and children in the country. She is currently a Member of Parliament, a member of the Union of Women of Sudan and a professor of the Science and Technology University.
The Association's mission is promoting and maintaining contacts with Russia in the field of culture and education and establishing contacts with its HE institutions. Seeking to increase its membership, it plans to launch regional branch offices.
