Ogarev Mordovia State University

Mordovia State University is the flagship of higher education in the Republic of Mordovia. Founded in 1931, it is today one of the leading institutes of higher education in Russia, a member in the Association of Classical Universities of Russia and the founder of the Association of Russian Universities in the field of economics and management.

A new research status "National Research University", conferred on Mordovia State University in 2010 is convincing proof that university achievements in education, research and innovation ar-eas are recognised by the Russian government.

Mordovia State University incorporates 11 faculties (departments), 8 academic institutes, 7 re-search institutes and 2 affiliated campuses in cities of Mordovia. Prospective students are now able to opt for over 130 diploma programmes with the European format of conferred degrees (Bachelor, Master) in accordance with Bologna Declaration. Combining classical traditions of the Russian education with recent trends in the global system of education, integrating teaching with innovative research in the field of high-end technologies, the university takes the plunge to prepare a new generation of graduates who will be playing a leading role in the development of regional economy and social infrastructure.

Since 1931 more than 150 000 graduates have had studies and successfully graduated the uni-versity. The academic staff is qualified, most part with various academic degrees and extensive teaching experience. There are 14 Dissertation Boards on campus where 65 dissertations and 205 theses have been defended over the recent 5 years. The Quality Assurance System of Train-ing competition held among Russian universities, put Mordovia State University in the top six universities for teaching quality assessments. In 2010 it was successfully certified according to the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 in education and science.

From the very beginning Mordovia State University has positioned itself not only as an educational but also a scientific centre of Volga region and Russia. Research groups of university currently do research in 28 fields of science and engineering. University scholars carry out joint innovative projects with leading federal research centres of the Academies of Sciences and high-tech SMEs of the Mordovian Republic. Experimental research facilities have recently been pro-foundly updated by investing more than 841 million roubles in the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment and by remodelling 16 laboratories.

University implements the Development Programme 2010-2019 (total funding - 70 mln. €) that defines its priorities in education, research and innovative activities. A resident of the Federal Technopark Mordovia and Skolkovo Innovation Centre (Moscow), the university in partnership with the Republican Centre for Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials fulfills a number of large-scale projects.

The University's Academic library named after the famous literary scholar and philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin, is one of the largest book storage (2,5 mln of items) and information centres in Russia. The library has online research system providing access to 39 various academic full-text data bases. The university has 12 museums which are employed in the educational process.

The university is home to 26000 students including over 700 from various regions of Russia and 350 international enrollees. Presidential and Governmental scholarships are awarded to support 100 talented students for excellence in academic studies and research; local Republican government provides its own welfare options to excellent students as well. Graduate employ-ability rate is 90% where 80% of university graduates are employed in the field of their spe-cialisation.

The University attaches paramount importance to developing international collaboration with universities and scientific organisations in Europe, Asia and the U.S. There are 50 agree-ments on international scientific collaboration with HEIs from Armenia, Belgium, Belorussia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, U.S.A, Ukraine. Annually dozens of international professors come to the university as guest lecturers.

Mordovia State University offers its international applicants comfortable living conditions at hostels (halls of residence). Two recently built de luxe halls of residence accommodating more than 1000 students; located in centre of the city they offer comfortable rooms: each has a cable TV, a fridge, a shower cabin. Equipped with automatic fire alarm, external video surveillance system and a card reading system on entry doors, it makes them the safest place for living. Among the facilities are computer classes with an Internet access, laundry rooms, performance halls and fitness rooms. Here you will find all necessary conditions to pursue studies and have adequate rest. In 2010 the University campus won the prestigious competition in nomination "The Best Halls of Residence", held among 196 Russian universities.

Students and teaching staff avail themselves of study schemes and are regularly awarded indi-vidual grants by leading international grants providers such as IREX, Fulbright, CEU, USIA, Eurasia Foundation, US Embassy, Canada Embassy, DAAD, EU funding schemes: Tempus Tacis: Jean Monet, Erasmus Mundus, 7FP, British Council.

University is a renowned centre for Finno-Ugric studies. Among facilities that contribute to a successful collaboration in this field are the Interregional Science Centre for Finno-Ugric Na-tions in the Volga Region and the Information Resource Centre "Heritage of the Finno-Ugric People" and on top of that is the international journal "The Finno-Ugric World" which accepts publications concerned with various aspects of the Finno-Ugric studies. This direction of educa-tion and research ensures the highest rate of international academic mobility among all catego-ries of the university staff, engaged in Finno-Ugric Studies.

There are ample opportunities for students to participate in recreational, sporting and cultural activities both on and off campus. Intellectual games are especially popular and no wonder that student teams of Mordovia State University are frequent prize-winners of Russian champion-ships in intellectual games. Students can develop their talents in vocal and choreographic stu-dios of the House of Culture&Arts, join intellectual and tourist clubs. Current students exhibit their talents in humour and hone their performance skills in an annual festival called Student Springtime.

The university strives to encourage physical culture and sports among students and staff. At students and teaching staff's disposal are 2 Sports & Recreation Centres, 4 sports halls, 3 ski lodges and a swimming pool. The University has for the third time won the competition in nomination "An Academic Institution of a Healthy Life Style", held among Russian universi-ties. Quite a few well-known names in sport - including international level, world record break-ing athletes in race walking, Olympic Games winners have all studied at the University. During the recent years four academic buildings have been built, with state-of-the-art fitness centre and swimming pool, Palace of Culture&Arts, two de luxe halls of residence to throw in the mix. The main campus 17-floor building is currently under construction.
