Southern Federal University
Southern Federal University (SFedU) is a major academic, scientific and cultural hub which was one of the first federal universities to appear in Russia. The university traces its history back to 1915. Today SFedU is an innovative research university that provides its students with comprehensive education, maintained through integration between the educational process and the fundamental and applied scientific research, based upon cutting edge technologies and techniques.
The university trains highly-skilled experts in the fields of natural sciences, engineering and technical sciences, humanities, architecture and arts, pedagogy.
At present SFedU offers 53 Bachelor's degree programs, 80 Master's degree programs (including 200 specialized Master's courses), 18 Specialist degree programs, as well as 25 postgraduate educational research programs.
Traditionally in SFedU special attention is given to the education of foreign students because we offer qualified education at the global standard, focused on producing competent professionals who are capable of being successful in their fields in any country of the world. SFedU has been training international experts since 1948. During this period over 7000 professionals from 120 countries have graduated from SFedU. By the number of foreign graduates, SFedU is one of the leading universities of Russia. Now SFedU has about 2,000 international students from Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, Middle East.
International students are invited to apply for Bachelor's, Master's and Specialist degree programs, as well as Postgraduate studies
The standard duration of a degree program is 4 years for a Bachelor's degree, 2 years for a Master's degree, and 5 years for Specialist degree. The duration of postgraduate training is 3 years.
The academic year stars on 1st of September and ends on 30th of June. Admission to SFedU is carried out on 1st of September. The process of admission of international applicants is overviewed by the Centre for Interaction with International Students.
In accordance with the Federal Law from 29.12.2012 N 273-ФЗ "On Education in the Russian Federation" SFedU independently carries out in the prescribed manner the recognition of foreign education and (or) qualification, in order to organize admission to study at SFedU as well as in the implementation of access SFedU professional activities of persons with foreign education and (or) qualification. Documents expertise is free.
SFedU graduates receive European Diploma Supplements
SFedU graduates are provided with diploma supplements. They are issued in the English language and contain information on graduate's academic achievement and the degree awarded, the Russian system of education as well as the graduate's performance and information about the grading system. The amount of academic hours and study workload is indicated in credits according to the ECTS standards (European Credit Transfer System). The diploma supplement makes it possible for SFedU graduates to have their qualifications acknowledged abroad and gives them an opportunity to apply for studying at European universities, as well as facilitates interaction with employers worldwide.
Foundation Course at the Preparatory Department for International Students
Foreign applicants who intend to study at Southern Federal University have to take a one-year Foundation Course offered by the Preparatory Department. The course provides classes of Russian language as well as other subjects, which are necessary to continue education at one of the faculties of SFedU.
The course provides prospective students with the knowledge and skills required to pass the university entrance examination.
The Foundation Course consists of:
General Russian Language Practice
Training in Specialized Scientific Vocabulary
Training in Humanities / Economics / Natural Sciences / Engineering/Biomedical Science
The range of subjects depends on the chosen specialization:
- applicants opting for Engineering study Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Graphics and Informatics (for those opting for "Architecture" and "Design" additional compulsory subjects are taught which are "Painting" and "Composition".
- applicants opting for Economics study Mathematics, Economic, and Social Geography, Foundations of Economic Theory, History and Social Studies;
- applicants opting for Humanities study Russian Literature, History, and Cultural Studies, Social Studies;
- applicants opting for Natural Sciences study Mathematics, Physics / Chemistry, and Foundations of Computer Science;
- applicants opting for Biomedical Science study Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
Students of the Foundation Course are taught the Russian language in small groups of 8, and other subjects in groups of 16. The classes are 6 days a week, 4 to 6 academic hours a day. The course lasts for 1 year (2 semesters) starting on September 15. More than half of the duration of the course is dedicated to learning Russian.
At the end of the academic year all students take exams in the Russian language (First level certificate) and the entrance exam in the relevant subject. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Course, the applicants are awarded with the Certificate of graduation from the Preparatory Department.
Student accommodation at SFedU
The University's two campuses consist of a number of up-to-date residence halls providing students with convenient and comfortable accommodation.

On SFedU's campus the apartment has one or two rooms to be shared by two or three people.
Accommodation fees are 1550 Rubles per month,
The university administration tries to ensure that all the required sporting, health care and other facilities are located on-campus. The renovated campuses boast a well-developed infrastructure that include libraries and reading halls, cafeterias, laundry rooms, gym, medical rooms, sports grounds for basketball, volleyball etc.
Student life at SFedU
Apart from quality education, SFedU offers its students a variety of opportunities for intercultural communication. International students participate in sporting events, talent shows and cultural activities, day trips, etc. which give them memorable impressions and valuable experience. SFedU campuses have their own libraries and computer rooms where international students can learn more about Russian and each other's culture.
Foreign students have an opportunity to participate in general events as well as special events organised by SFedU Centre for Interaction with International Students, such as singing and dancing contests, Russian language competitions, the so-called "Festival of Slavic Alphabet", and international parties for making friends.

Southern Federal University is the largest university in the South of Russia, the region which has long been known for its multicultural traditions and hospitality. The University's location adds to its uniqueness. Most of SFedU faculties and departments are located in Rostov-on-Don which is a beautiful southern city, a major industrial and cultural hub located on the bank of scenic River Don, and also the capital of Donskoi Krai. The technical faculties of SFedU are situated in Taganrog in Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov.
Rostov-on-Don is the regional centre, and Donskoi Krai is a big Russian region which has historically been the home to Don Cossacks. The Cossack region is famous for its original culture and interesting history. Donskoi krai is the homeland of great Russian authors A. P. Chekhov and M. A. Sholokhov.
The climate of Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog is moderately continental. We have many parks that not only adorn the cities but also reduce the wind. Winter here is mild, changeable, with frequent repetition of thaws and icing of streets. The average temperature in winter is -7 - -5 °C (19-24 °F). January is the coldest month of the year. Spring comes early. The weather becomes dry and hot in late May. The hottest month is July (the temperature may be from +23°C to +38°C, or 75 - 100 °F). City heating is activated in the middle of October. The temperature in autumn is about +5 - +9°C (40-48 °F). It starts snowing by late November.
